Review of learning disability patients to have a choice in contraception
We would like the government to review the process regarding patients with learning disabilities; including choice and awareness being made of the medicines potentially including contraceptives, and patients being allowed to make an informed decision about whether they take the medicine or not.
As a student nurse, about to qualify as a registered learning disability nurse, I have been made aware that many of the patients I’ve come across are on medication with side effects they have no idea about.
Some patients may have been on the medication shortly after starting their menstrual cycle, preventing them from having the opportunity to conceive.
Patients have the rights to know about contraception, and the effects their medication has, with consistent reviews and assessments needed.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.
We understand that you are concerned about medical treatment for people with learning disabilities, but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do.
All adults are presumed to have sufficient capacity to decide on their own medical treatment, unless there's significant evidence to suggest otherwise. If the healthcare professional feels you have the capacity to give your consent, your decision will be accepted and your wishes will continue to be respected, even if you lose capacity at a later stage. If the healthcare professional feels you do not currently have the capacity to give consent and you have not made an advance decision or formally appointed anyone to make decisions for you, they'll need to carefully consider what's in your best interests before making a decision.
The process for determine a person's best interests if they lack the capacity to give consent is set out here: www.nhs.uk/conditions/consent-to-treatment/capacity/
We could accept a petition calling for the Government to change rules regarding to consent for medical treatment for people who lack the capacity to give consent, but it would need to be clear what changes you wanted to be made to existing requirements.
