Petition Action

Allow extended characters on passprts e.g. Welsh, Gaelic, French, German, Spanish names

Additional Information

British passport should be able to reflect the names of its citizens and therefore at least allow indigenous extended characters on passports, i.e. Welsh/Gaelic alphabet.

This is already possible when registering births, i.e. SiƓn is on my son's birth certificate but this is not allowed on his British passport. It will have to be Sion. This is pronounced differently and is therefore a different name.

We are a part of the European Union and therefore there will be marriages producing British babies who will have European names with special characters, this should also be reflected.

British passports are supposed to show the identity of its citizens. It currently does not.
