Reform UK car safety regulations to rectify gender inequalities
The UK is currently adhering to UNECE safety standards. While we would still have to maintain these, our withdrawal from the EU offers an opportunity for the UK to introduce higher standards, meaning men and women will be equally protected in the case of a car accident.
Women are at a significant safety disadvantage in cars. Factors such as seat height and firmness, as well as mostly male crash-test dummies that don’t account for female muscle mass distribution, bone density, and pregnancy play a significant role in this.
As a result, in a car crash a woman is:
• 47% more likely to be seriously injured.
• 17% more likely to die.
In a society that strives for equality, this is unacceptable.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.
We understand that you are concerned about existing safety standards, but we're not sure exactly what reforms you want to existing regulation of car safety standards.
You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do. For example, we could accept a petition calling for a review into women's safety in vehicle safety regulations, if that's something you'd like to see happen.
