Petition Action

Enforce banks to tell you who carried out identity theft on your account.

Petition Details

Change in law to allow a sender of funds to acquire the recipient of funds (or goods or services) PII within 14 days from the transaction with regards to identity theft. To find out who performed the theft. The current way of finding out who stole your identity is rather time-consuming and costly.

Additional Information

The Banking Secrecy Act prevents this from happening as they will not disclose the details of the recipient. There is a grey area when identity theft is involved. If someone uses your card without permission to pay for something or transfer to someone, it’s likely you will never find out who carried out the transaction. The person may be closer to home than you think and you will want to know to protect yourself from such theft again, so it's vital we get access to the PII of the recipient.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you are concerned about people who the victims of identity fraud, but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do. There is no Banking Secrecy Act, and it's not clear in exactly what circumstances you want people to be given information about recipients of funds.

In any case, investigating allegations of crimes related to identity fraud, and identifying perpetrators, is a matter for the police.
