Petition Action

Make phone carriers liable for allowing hoax calls.

Petition Details

Ammend relevant legislation to shift liabilty to phone service providers to prevent hoax calls.

Additional Information

New data in the public domain shows that over 1 billion nuisance calls (e.g. silent calls, spam or frauds) have been made to people in the United Kingdom in 2021 so far and nuisance call volumes are currently increasing at a rate of 30% every month. Telephone service providers are in a position to track reports of nuisance calls and block them, but this does not happen. Making them liable when they fail to protect the public would create an incentive for them to act.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you are concerned about unwanted or hoax calls, but it's also not clear what you want you want to happen to make phone carriers liable for nuisance or hoax calls.

In any case, regulation and oversight of telecommunications is a matter for the communications services regulator Ofcom, and individual carriers. You can find out more here: www.ofcom.org.uk/complaints/complain-about-phones-or-internet-services/unwanted-calls-and-messages/silent-abandoned-scam-calls

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
