the lifting/ easing of covid restrictions on pride events.
Pride has been a celebration and an opportunity to bring awareness to the issues and discrimination of lgbtq+ people for over 50 years now and has never been more important than the present. Homophobic hate crimes have increased by 250% over the past years and the lives of lgbtq+ people are at risk.
Violent hate crimes towards the lgbtq+ community have been rife since the easing of lockdown. The community is scared and feeling hopeless. There has been a number of unprovoked violent hate crimes been shared on social media over the past weeks especially in the merseyside area and there needs to be a change. The allowing of football and other sporting events to continue but pride be cancelled just shows the governments complete disregard for lgbtg+ people in favour of the straight majority.
