Change the age requirements for social media from 13 to a minimum of 16

Petition Details

There is an ever increasing amount of trolling and predators affecting many young people in schools this could be somewhat mitigated by requiring users to be a minimum of 16, providing a verified ID to stop fake accounts or if under 16 the account should be verified by a parent or legal guardian

Additional Information

Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok to name a few only require a person to be 13 to create an account which can easily be circumvented by using a fake date of birth, this could be solved by having a minimum age of 16 to set up a personal account or for an adult to create the account with a verified ID and have it linked to their own account, if it was a requirement to provide valid ID that would also stop trolls and predators creating multiple accounts and would protect children

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action. We're not sure whether you want a legal minimum age for social media accounts, or for parental verification for social media ccounts.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
