Provide tougher sentencing for Racial and Religiously aggravated Malicious Comms
It is unfortunate that England lost the Euros, but it even more unfortunate that our talented players, namely, Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho have been subjected to abhorrent racial abuse on social media. This petition proposes to pass tougher sentencing for Racial abuse sent online.
Improper use of public electronic communications network is an offence.
Defendants can currently only face a maximum sentence of 6 months (Summary).
In order and to ensure that those who post racist abuse online via social media think twice about the consequences before posting, we would like to create a separate offence of Racially and Religiously aggravated comms, which can be tried on Indictment, at Crown Court, with a prison sentence of more than 6 months, and an unlimited fine.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.
We understand that you are concerned about online abuse, but it's not clear if you want the Government to increase sentences for existing offences, or create a new offence.
You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
We have published the following petition, which you might like to sign:
