Educational institutions to make it mandatory to teach awareness of social media

Petition Details

To start a mental health program that will include awareness on all social media platforms. This would be in all educational institutions around the country but to then expand and inspire. This could be included in class talks or assembly.

Additional Information

Education is important for people's future, but their needs to be a change of realistic aspects of teaching. Been real, talking about our feelings will save so many lives and the fact that social media is making it worse.

Quoted by the Mental Health Foundation 50% of mental health problems are established by age 14 and 75% by age 24. This has increased in years. From 2018 to 2020 the use of social media in young people increased by 17% this could be because the use of tiktok.

Using social media can be a positive aspect, but we need to teach people the importance of our own well-being.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The new Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education curriculum already requires schools to teach students about internet safety and harms, including negotiating social media and that the internet can be a negative place where online abuse, trolling, bullying and harassment can take place, which can have a negative impact on mental health: assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/908013/Relationships_Education__Relationships_and_Sex_Education__RSE__and_Health_Education.pdf
