Petition Action

Make it an offence for Councillors to breach the Nolan Principles of Public Life

Petition Details

Councillors should be legally required to abide by the Nolan Principles of Public Life at all times. Sometimes councillors do not behave in a manner befitting their position as an elected representative, and sometimes evade complaints by saying they were not acting as a councillor at the time.

Additional Information

There have been cases of bullying, for instance, but this can go unpunished because the Principles of Public Life are not enshrined in law, and codes of conduct for councillors are a matter for individual councils. It is a public position and any breach of the Nolan Principles should be treated seriously under the law, without any excuses for not acting as a councillor at the time of any alleged offence.
