Petition Action

Make MP's accountable for their official Social Media accounts/ content on them.

Petition Details

Make and hold MP's accountable for their official social media posts, especially posts that are Homophobic, Transphobic or generally attack minorities in the communities they represent/ the UK.

Additional Information

The posts are seen by constituents who can be directly impacted by them and cause distress. Transphobic and homophobic content adds fuel to ignorance and creates more hatred within communities outside of these minorities. These minorities are protected by laws but so many MP's have posts that go against these laws and attack those most vulnerable. They are paid by the people for all people, their polarised views have no place in a free nation.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you are concerned about social media posts by certain MPs, but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do.

MPs are already responsible for what they post on social media. Taking action in relation to any offensive social media posts would be a matter for the social media host, or if an offence has been committed the police. If the an MP's conduct on social media breached the code of conduct for MPs this could also be reported to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards.
