Oppose the persecution of gays in Nigeria
The British Government should use all of their influence to put pressure on the Nigerian Government to repeal recently passed anti-gay legislation that is resulting in the torture and imprisonment of gay Nigerians.
Action should include withdrawing aid of over £200 million a year to a country that has vast wealth which is all but squandered by corrupt and hypocritical politicians as well as questioning Nigeria's continued membership of The Commonwealth.
Failure to put pressure on the Nigerian Government will probably result in a significant increase in asylum requests from Nigerians facing gay persecution and from that perspective, as well as the obvious humanitarian one, the British Government should be using its influence rather than just looking in the other direction as thousands of people suffer the fear of being arrested, tortured, imprisoned, humilated or even the prospect of a death penalty.
