Petition Action

Make cycling infrastructure fit for purpose. Just like we have done with roads.

Petition Details

The national network of cycle paths is piecemeal, chaotic and dangerous, with precious few exceptions. It pits cyclists against pedestrians and inhibits safe and efficient cycling. We need to have a nationally planned gold standard and we need sustained investment.

Additional Information

There are so many reasons. Active travel reduces emissions and noise, and it promotes better physical and mental health. For a relatively small investment compared to road building, we will all benefit.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you are concerned about current cycling infrastructure, but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do. The Government is already funding investment in cycling infrastructure, and has produced guidance on cycle infrastructure design, and it's not clear what you want to be done differently.

You can read about Government cycling and walking investment, grant funding, research and infrastructure case studies here: www.gov.uk/government/collections/cycling-and-walking

And you can read the Government's guidance for local authorities on designing high-quality, safe cycle infrastructure here: www.gov.uk/government/publications/cycle-infrastructure-design-ltn-120

We could accept a petition calling for increased funding for cycling infrastructure, or to review Government guidance on cycle infrastructure design.
