Petition Action

Create an urgent UK scheme to resettle 10,000 refugees from Afghanistan.

Petition Details

We want the government to create a scheme for Afghanistan similar to the Vulnerable Person's Resettlement Scheme which was used to support Syrians. We need to offer immediate urgent aid to those fleeing the Taliban

Additional Information

Right now, women, children, journalists and human right defenders are fleeing the Taliban. We can follow Canada's lead and offer sanctuary to people escaping Afghanistan. The UK has very few safe routes to safety, the Vulnerable Person's Resettlement Scheme to support Syrians is a good model to create a scheme for Afghanistan. Following our government's intervention in Afghanistan the UK has a moral duty to create a safe route for those fleeing from Afghanistan.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The Home Office announced on 18 August 2021 a bespoke resettlement route for Afghan refugees who have been forced to flee the country. The aim is to resettle 5,000 Afghan nationals in the first year of the scheme, and up to 20,000 people in the long-term. You can read more about it on the gov.uk website: www.gov.uk/government/news/bespoke-resettlement-route-for-afghan-refugees-announced
