Commit to receiving a minimum of 20,000 Afghani refugees and asylum seekers.
Canada has committed to recieving 20,000 people fleeing the crisis in Afghanistan. The UK was a part of a coalition, with Canada, that invaded and destabilised Afghanistan. As part of continuation of that coalition, we the UK & Northern Ireland, should at least match their resettlement commitments.
Many of those in Afghanistan over the last 20 years have worked closely with the Western coalition. These people include teachers, interpreters, women activists, police officers, and many more. In doing so, these people have put themselves at great risk of retribution from the new Taliban leadership entering Kabul. Now, and not a moment later, is the time to match our ally's commitment of 20,000 to help those fleeing Afghanistan and seeking refuge in the UK & Northern Ireland.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
The Home Office announced on 18 August 2021 a bespoke resettlement route for Afghan refugees who have been forced to flee the country. The aim is to resettle 5,000 Afghan nationals in the first year of the scheme, and up to 20,000 people in the long-term. You can read more about it on the gov.uk website: www.gov.uk/government/news/bespoke-resettlement-route-for-afghan-refugees-announced
