Petition Action

Make any use of someone's identity without expressed permission a crime

Petition Details

Presently it is not considered a crime when someone fraudulently uses another person’s identity to make searches/quotes for insurance and other services in an attempt to obtain those services without the consent or knowledge of the real owner of the identity.

Additional Information

Make it a crime to use a person’s identity to attempt to obtain quotes/searches for services from third parties when not granted permission by that person, so those who are using the identity of another in an attempt to defraud companies of money are punished before actual successful fraud has taken place rather than react when the fraud has occurred and services have been taken.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Fraud by false representation, which would include using another person's identity, is already a criminal offence under the Fraud Act 2006: www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2006/35/section/2
