Petition Action

Ban Overfishing of Sharks - Up to 100 Million Sharks are Killed Yearly

Petition Details

Overfishing sharks disrupts the ocean's ecosystem & the health of our planet. With the decline of sharks, existing predators will increase, leaving scarce fish for human consumption. With the indirect control of species, sharks are able to protect seagrass which removes carbon from the atmosphere.

Additional Information

Sharks are vital to us, and our planet, which is why we must do what we can to protect them.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you are concerned about fishing of sharks, but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do.

There are already restrictions on capturing, keeping, injuring and killing certain fish, including basking sharks and angel sharks: www.gov.uk/government/publications/protected-marine-species/fish-including-seahorses-sharks-and-skates

In addition, the UK Government is only responsible for rules governing fishing in UK waters.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
