Petition Action

I would like it to be illegal to lock the doors of any taxi.

Petition Details

I was locked inside a taxi against my will after begging to pay by card but this driver apparently had a £7.50 minimum payment. No signage to suggest this. He locked the doors and would not let me out. I did not refuse to pay.

Additional Information

It isn’t right that I was held against my will in an enclosed space. If there was a fire or any kind of disaster in or around a taxi and the doors are locked, how do you get out? It should be illegal to lock the doors of any public transport, especially a taxi. I don’t feel safe in taxis anymore, and these are something I have always used.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

It's already illegal under false imprisonment legislation to intentionally restrict another person's movement within any area without legal authority, justification, or the restrained person's permission.

You might consider reporting this incident to the police or to the taxi company. You can find out how to report a crime to the police here: www.police.uk/pu/contact-the-police/report-a-crime-incident/
