Petition Action

Require MPs to have their primary residence in the constituency they represent

Petition Details

Members represent a community and they should be part of that community, experience it day by day.

Additional Information

Requiring residency would aid accessibility and encourage the local population to engage with their representative. MPs living outside the area makes them appear distant and uncaring despite everything that may try to address that.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We understand you're concerned about MPs representing constituencies they don't live in, however we're not sure what you mean by 'primary' residence.

You could have a petition calling for a mandatory minimum residency period for candidates standing as an MP in a General Election, if that is something you'd like to see happen.
