Do not lower the threshold at which student loans are repaid.
The government are considering lowering the threshold at which graduates begin to pay Student Loans, from £27,000 to £23,000. Do not do this.
Decreasing the threshold will cost graduates an additional £400 a year. This comes at a time when house prices are already increasing faster than is possible to keep up with, and when a NI tax rise is going to hit working graduates for even more.
This will stifle social mobility further, and create further discontent in young voters. It is a punishment for not coming from wealth and it is discriminatory against those less well off.
Education is vital. Encourage it. Don't discourage it.
