Create a Climate Regulator

Petition Details

Create a Climate Regulator that:
1. Agrees sector pledges
2. Ensures reporting against these pledges
3. Addresses non compliance

Additional Information

The reasons that a Climate Regulator is good news for the UK are:
1. Helps address the climate emergency faster (https://www.ipcc.ch/)
2. A voluntary commitment approach is not going to achieve enough
3. The external pressure will lead to many innovations and ultimately help businesses
4. Helps ensure the UK meets its own climate commitments (https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-to-go-further-and-faster-to-tackle-climate-change)
5. Would be a world first, demonstrates climate leadership and is good for the UK brand

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We understand you are concerned about how efforts to mitigate climate change are regulated, however it's not clear how the regulator you propose would be different from the Climate Change Committee (CCC), the UK's climate change advisor which was created by the Climate Change Act 2008. The CCC's responsibilities include the monitoring of "progress in reducing emissions and achieving carbon budgets and targets". You can find out more about the CCC here: www.theccc.org.uk/.

If there are specific changes to the CCC's powers and responsibilities that you'd like to see being made, you could start a petition about that.
