Petition Action

Offer routine Group B streptococcus (GBS) test to all pregnant women in the UK

Petition Details

We need to be offering routine antenatal screening to women- ESPECIALLY in the first pregnancy.
A simple test in the antenatal period could save thousands of lives each year & huge heartache in undiagnosed cases.

Additional Information

Routine screening, especially as a primigravia woman experiencing pregnancy for the first time NEEDS to be offered urgently.
This could save 150 000 preventable deaths a year, that’s 2-3 in 50 babies yearly.

Countries such as America have already implemented routine screening in the antenatal period. Why are we not offering this?
It’s a simple test that can reap huge benefits to women and their families.
GBS is a detectable infection and easily preventable. We NEED to start screening women.
