Petition Action

Update NHS/111 and Public guidance to reflect evolving dominant Covid symptoms

Petition Details

UK Covid symptom prevalence now: 1 Headache 2 Runny nose 3 Sneezing 4 Sore throat 5 Cough so relying on 8 Fever and 6 Loss of Smell/Taste is unsafe. NHS & Public are not updated of need to test if they have the current most prevalent symptoms which can be severely undermining control of viral spread

Additional Information

Viruses evolve to cause milder initial illness because when a virus is too debilitating it’s victims do not spread it. The most prevalent Covid symptoms are changing, so to identify infected persons accurately the advice to test needs to be guided by the most up to date and accurate symptom information available. The Government should ensure this is done by eg HAS UK (was Public Health England) as the guidance for testing is/has not been updated. Ref: Prof. Tim Spector of ZOE & Guys Hospital.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions must call for a specific action that the UK Government or Parliament are directly responsible for.

Decisions about advice provided by the NHS is a clinical matter for the NHS and individual clinicians, not the Government or Parliament.

We could accept a petition calling on the Government to increase the number of symptoms for which it advises people to get a PCR test, if that's what you want to happen.
