Ban ex MPs found guilty of breaking parliamentary rules from HOL peerages

Petition Details

MPs who break parliamentary rules/laws and resign or are suspended after being found guilty by the standards committee or by any other authority should be banned from being made peers in the House of Lords. No exceptions.

Additional Information

If an individual elected to power as an MP, loses that position/the people’s trust by breaking rules/laws then they should not be given a place in the House of Lords were they yet again hold power that can affect the people of this country. Actions have consequences and this must apply to all.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We understand that you are concerned about MPs who have not met a certain standard being appointed to House of Lords, but we're not sure exactly who you want to be barred from appointment to the House of Lords.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do. For example, we could accept a petition calling on the Government to bar anyone the Committee on Standards has found to be in breach of the Code of Conduct for MPs from being appointed the House of Lords, if that's what you want to happen.

You can find out more about the House of Commons Code of Conduct and Guide to Rules here: www.parliament.uk/business/publications/commons/hoc-code-of-conduct/
