Petition Action

Adjust the national living wage for citizens of Brighton and Hove

Petition Details

The cost of living in Brighton is far greater than that of it's surrounding cities, cities of equal size, and large cities around the country. This combined with wages matching that of these locations, makes living conditions an intense mental strain on the majority of citizens; new and current.

Additional Information

When comparing cities in Sussex with Brighton we can see rent increases of the following:
64.50% higher than in Hastings
63.88% higher than in Eastbourne
33.41% higher than in Worthing

Rent compared with cities in equal or grater population size:
92.62% higher than in Liverpool
61.14% higher than in Portsmouth
44.74% higher than in Manchester

The average cost of groceries is 8.16% higher in Brighton than it is in the cities mentioned.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do. The national minimum wage doesn't have regional variations as it's a national wage.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do, such as changing the national living wage to a local living wage based on living costs, if that's what you'd like to see happen.
