Petition Action

Limit what second jobs MPs can take.

Petition Details

Change the law so that MPs wanting second jobs can only select jobs from those industries which are experiencing staff shortages, such as the hospitality industry, abattoirs, fruit and veg picking, HGV driving, or any other job which pays minimum wage.

Additional Information

The government thinks that MPs should have second jobs, so that they have some experience outside of parliament and can keep in touch with the ordinary citizen. Working in a board room or as a lobbyist will not do that, my suggestion would keep them in touch with the people they are meant to represent. It would also show that they got into politics for the benefit of the country rather than for their own benefit.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you want the Government to restrict the jobs MPs can do in addition to their duties as an MP, but we're not sure exactly what jobs you want MPs to be able to do.

We could accept a petition calling for MPs only to be allowed to take jobs that are on the shortage occupations list, or jobs that don't pay more than the minimum wage, although the latter would mean MPs could take any job, providing they agreed to do it for the minimum wage.
