Petition Action

Hold public enquiry into why petitions to abolish House of Lords are rejected.

Petition Details

Investigate why petitions to abolish the House of Lords or hold a referendum on the continued existence of this anti-democratic body of political appointees, are consistently rejected by the petitions service, despite abolition receiving public support from all sides of the political spectrum.

Additional Information

When I recently set up a petition to abolish the House of Lords, it received the necessary sponsors within minutes. It was then rejected, despite me being willing to accept a reworded version. I then checked and found that all such petitions have been rejected - suggesting that the petitions service, which itself is run by unelected individuals, is working in support of another body of unelected individuals, both seeking to influence the ability of elected MPs to serve the electorate.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do. There is a petition calling for the abolition of the House of Lords currently open for signature
