National bank holiday for Slavery Abolition
The Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, which abolished slavery throughout most parts of the British Empire, came into force the following year, on 1 August 1834. We call upon the Government to make the first Friday of August a Bank Holiday.
By making the first Friday of August a Bank Holiday National bank holiday on Slavery Abolition, communities can come together to remember as they do on other important moments in our nation's history. This can be a date to bring people from different backgrounds to reflect and learn about Slavery Abolition.
