Why can't we start a disasters emergency charity/fund to help with drainage on the Somerset Levels?
If the government can only give £1 million pounds of the £4 million needed to help drainage on the Somerset Levels would it be possible to start a fund supported be public donations and Government to cover the process. Any excess could be used to help those whose livelihoods have been ruined in the present floods.
This is a "home" disaster where the public could help just as we always do for disasters abroad. As this is agricultural land that supplies local food produce its damage affects all of us. Food prices will rise, insurance will rise for everybody in Britain.
