Petition Action

Change the law to Emotional and Intellectual Age of Criminal Responsibility.

Petition Details

Safeguard those who have been abused, traumatised and have attachment difficulties, and those with neuro developmental differences from the criminal justice system, by establishing if the individuals are actually emotionally or intellectually criminally responsible at the time of an offence.

Additional Information

To prevent criminalisation of looked after children and improving their long term outcomes. Prevent traumatising children/adults through the unnecessary use of the criminal justice system, where the end result is likely to end in an absolute or conditional discharge; due to lack of intellectual intelligence, neurological differences or having a lower emotional age than the age of criminality. To save money, distress and to support those who have already suffered and been abused enough in life.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you are concerned about how the justice system treats certain people who are over the age of criminal responsibility, but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do.

It's not clear if you want people with certain conditions to be treated as not having criminal responsibility, or something else.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do. If you do want people with certain conditions to be treated as not having criminal responsibility, you'd need to be clear who you want to be treated in this way.
