Introduce a fact check procedure in the parliamentary process

Petition Details

Parliamentary privilege means that our politicians can say what they want in parliament. They can lie with impunity, the only challenges to the truth can come from the opposition, or interventions from the speaker. I want Hansard to include fact checking in its records within 24hr of a debate

Additional Information

The electorate need to have faith in its politicians. There is anecdotal evidence of some MP’s purposely telling mistruths in parliament. There have also been cases where some MP’s have called out these mistruths only to be reprimanded by the speaker. We need truth. We need honesty. We do not need blatant lies recorded in Hansard. In the 21st century it should be possible to fact check debate and make a comment in the records that a lie has been told.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you want a new system to be introduced to fact check statements made in Parliament, but we're not sure if you want any statement of fact made in Parliament to be fact checked, or only statements where the accuracy of a statement has been challenged, or something else.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
