Reid’s law - Widening the criteria of domestic violence

Petition Details

I would like the government to review and alter what the law defines as domestic violence/ abuse.
Many people are abused over a prolonged period of time, however if they are not in a relationship it is currently not viewed as domestic violence, robbing them of the justice and support they need.

Additional Information

If people are emotionally, physically and sexually abused over an extended period of time by someone that they are not in a relationship with, they are unable to seek help from domestic violence charities or be protected under domestic violence and domestic abuse laws.
This experience is more common than many people may realise, yet there are no laws or charities that can specifically help people in this situation.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do. We're not sure what you'd like to be covered by this change to the law. For example if you'd like it to cover abuse by people with any sort of relationship with a person, rather than just a romantic or familial relationship. The Domestic Violence Act 2021 sets out who is covered by the definition of domestic violence here:

www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2021/17/section/2/enacted

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
