Petition Action

Honour the UK's international commitments and prioritise the right to food.

Petition Details

Given the sharp rise in food bank use suggests that the UK is failing in its promises made to the international community under the ICESCR [1976]. Therefore, we call on the UK Government to commit itself to achieving the full potential of this right and making access to food a political reality.

Additional Information

Key facts:
- Art.11 ICESCR (which the UK has ratified) states that “The States Parties will take appropriate steps to ensure the realization of this right, recognizing to this effect the essential importance of international co-operation”
- The £20 cut to universal credit will push a further 500,000 people into poverty
- Food insecurity disproportionately affects Black led households (19%) [UK Gov]
- More than 1.7 million children in England in 2021 were receiving free school meals [Guardian]

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you are concerned about access to food, but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to make access to food a political reality.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
