Stop parents denying access to grandchildren
Amend the Children’s Act to extend rights to grandparents to have access to grandchildren. Where grandparents are forced to make an application for permission to seek access, contact should continue, unless there are safeguarding concerns. To undertake consultation with grandparents denied access.
An estimated 1.4 million grandparents, 2 million children in UK are denied loving relationships. A survey of 2,000 grandparents shows 1 in 7 were intentionally frozen out due to family breakdowns. We have examples of grandparents accused of harassment and being taken to police stations in some cases for sending cards/gifts, to grandchildren. In tragic cases of Arthur & Star, grandparents' concerns were ignored.
