Petition Action

Remove the EU imposed 5% VAT from energy bills.

Petition Details

In 1993 the EU imposed 5% VAT on energy bills.

The UK is no longer subject to EU legislation so thus tax should be removed from UK energy bills.

Additional Information

The EU imposed the 5% minimun VAT on household energy This makes gas and electricity much more expensive than necessary. We are no longer members of the EU so the VAT should be removed especially in light of the projected hike in energy costs from our foreign suppliers. The least wealthy are hit the hardest. The poorest households spend three times more of their income on household energy bills than the richest households spend.

In case it's helpful, you might like to know that EU does not 'impose' VAT on energy, it simply requires member states to set VAT on energy bills at a minimum of 5%. You can find out more about this here: www.bbc.co.uk/news/59897048
