Hold a referendum as to whether the UK should become a republic
This referendum would ask the public whether they want to end the hereditary principle in appointing the head of state, and replace this with a democratic election of a head of state for a single five-year term.
We believe the continuation of the automatic hereditary principle in choosing our head of state is archaic and elitist. This petition calls upon Parliament and Government to allow all eligible voting citizens of the country the right in a referendum to vote upon whether they wish the country to become a republic following the death of the current monarch. The wording of the referendum should indicate that the intention is not to create a presidential model akin to either the USA or France, but one similar to that of Germany. The elected head of state would have no additional powers to those of the current monarch.
