Petition Action

Provide an adequate maintaince loan for students from "high-income" families.

Petition Details

Many students like myself from "high-income" families don't get a big enough maintaince loan to survive. And my parents will not provide financial support for there children as it is no longer there legal duty. However the SLC still uses "household income" to assess elgibility for maintenance loans.

Additional Information

Many students like myself are from "high-income" families, however my parents will not financially support me, as it is no longer there legal duty. The SLC uses "household income" to assess a students maintaince loan. This is of course unreasonable as many parents will not pay for dorm fees etc. And as a student who wishes to study medicine getting a job is out of the question. Even with bursaries it still isn't possible and also I don't meet the criteria of an estranged student.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you are concerned about how parental income is taken into account when calculating eligibility for maintenance loans, but we're not sure if you want the Government to stop parental income being counted in these calculations, or do something else.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
