Make planning breaches a criminal offence

Petition Details

The law for people who break planning regulations should be the same as that for Listed Buildings.

Additional Information

People who deliberately break planning law should be held accountable and face criminal prosecution with a scale of meaningful fines and even imprisonment if the breaches are serious enough.

We believe the current system for enforcing planning regulations is insufficient, as councils often don't take action, and penalties for people who have broken the rules are limited.
Making breaches of planning regulations a criminal offence would mean police could be involved when the law is broken.

The prospect of fines and criminal prosecution should act as a greater deterrent.
