Petition Action

Give primacy of investigation of crime to the individual concerned.

Petition Details

In light of the example set by the Met Police and Boris Johnson it would be fair if all British citizens have the right to investigate themselves personally, or via their chosen representative, engaging the Police only if they find evidence of criminal activity and choose to hand over the evidence.

Additional Information

This would ensure that the rules apply equally to everybody. It would also save the Police significant amounts of time and in all likelihood reduce the backlog in the criminal justice system.

Of course the inverse could also be true, if the Police investigated all cases equally, where evidence of criminal activity indicates a crime has been committed, regardless of who the individual is or their position in society?

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions must call for a specific action that the UK Government or Parliament are directly responsible for.

Decisions about when to investigate reports of a crime are a matter for individual police forces, not the Government or Parliament. As a result it is not possible for the Government or Parliament to take the action you have requested.
