Petition Action

New MPs Code of Conduct with sacking available if found guilty of dishonesty

Petition Details

MPs need to be honest and have integrity. They should have a code of contact that is comparable or more enhanced than the police and armed forces with the facility to be sacked for misconduct

Additional Information

Honesty, integrity and transparency are at the centre of a responsible government. There are too many examples of dishonesty, corruption and arrogance in politics that something has to be done. Other public services have much more stringent codes of conduct and MPs should be more stringent

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you are concerned about sanctions that apply to MPs who are dishonesty, but we're not sure exactly what changes you'd like to be made to the Code of Conduct for MPs, or sanctions that apply for breaches of this.

The Code of Conduct for MPs already lists honesty as one of the principles that MPs are expected to observe in carrying out their parliamentary and public duties, and the House of Commons already has the ability to expel an MP from the House of Commons.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
