Revise the rules for the Child Benefit High Income Charge’s (CBHIC)

Petition Details

The CBHIC is paid by the families with at least one parent earning £50k+ a year.

Additional Information

The rules for this charge should be changed, so it is only paid if a household's income exceeds £100,000.

Current regulation unfairly penalises families with a sole earner whose income exceeds £50k a year. A family where both parents earn £49k (£98k household income) will receive 100% of child benefit. Family with one parent earning £60k will effectively receive £0 of child benefit. Worse off families with sole ‘high earners’ require more support in the form of child benefit. This unfortunately is not considered in the current legislation. Revise the rule to introduce a combined, increased threshold.
