Petition Action

Devolve powers to councils to set their own housing targets

Petition Details

Councils are too often faced with housing targets that can only be achieved by concreting over significant amounts of green space, with massive damage to the environment and quality of life.

Central government calculations play too large a role in determining local housing needs and numbers.

Additional Information

We call for:

- Greater powers for councils to determine their own housing needs and numbers, free from the influence of centralised calculations

- New policies to provide stronger protection for greenfield sites and prioritisation of brownfield development

- Support for those seeking to deliver truly affordable housing, such as community land trusts

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do. We're not sure whether you want Government targets for local housebuilding to be scrapped or something else. We're also not sure what 'new policies' and 'support' you'd like to see.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
