Require smokers pay for any medical treatment for lung cancer
Implement a new policy that anyone admitted to hospital who has chosen to be a smoker will have to pay for all of their lung cancer treatment, instead of the costs being borne by the NHS.
The data shows that smoking increases the risk of lung cancer. We therefore believe it is fair that people who choose to smoke be required to pay for any treatment they require for lung cancer.
We have to respect people's free will to smoke, it's their choice, but equally it's only fair that they are accountable for any lung care costs, as the advice has been consistent and clear and there has been adequate time and opportunities to quit smoking.
