Hold a confidence/no confidence referendum on the government every 2.5 years
Mid-way through a Prime Minister’s time in office (5 years), a referendum should be held on whether the general public has confidence, or no confidence, in the current government. If a majority vote 'no confidence' this should then lead to a general election.
It is seen that only Parliament has the power to dissolve the government, why should the general public not get a more regular say in whether the government and Prime Minister are doing an acceptable job? Not only that, even if a high proportion of Parliament does not have confidence in the government, due to the need for a two-third majority, it is very hard to trigger an early general election. Why should the public not have a more regular say in whether they believe the government is representing them?
