Scrap Job References in the United Kingdom

Petition Details

We want the government to remove this requirement from the employment system. This aspect of job application creates room for discrimination.

Additional Information

We want the Government to act on our wishes because it is hindering the vulnerable people in society, affecting the economy and being used by some employers/organisations against their employees. It is increasing stress and the negative impacts of the pandemic has made this clause a huge cause of unemployment.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We can only accept petitions about things the Government or Parliament are directly responsible for.

Decisions about whether to request references are a matter for individual employers, not the UK Government or Parliament.
