Create a new tax for retailers that waste food
We need retailers, and especially supermarkets, to stop wasting food every day.
The Government should create a new tax, set based on the amount of food waste a retailer is responsible for, to incentivise retailers to tackle food waste, and punish those that fail to do so.
Each day tonnes of food is sent to land fill by supermarkets. This is just not right and has to change.
Retailers should be charged for the amount of food they waste to encourage them to take action to reduce food waste, either by selling food near its sell by date more cheaply, or donating the food. With increased pressure to household and rising cost of food retailers need to be held to account for the amount the throw away each day. Wasted food increases costs for businesses, and so prices for consumers.
