Petition Action

To conduct freedom of navigation exercises to "tie up" Russian air/naval units.

Petition Details

Russian military units frequently approach the UK and cause us to scramble units escort them.
We request the UK government to a) order naval and air freedom of navigation exercises around Russia to tie up Russian military units and prevent them being used in Ukraine. b) ask NATO to join us.

Additional Information

It is a non-combat method of supporting Ukraine.
Russian military capability is a finite resource, for example there are limits on flying hours of aircraft before maintenance and limits on flying hours of air crew.
This action will use up "resources" enhancing the impact of the sanctions.
It prevents some units from taking part in the Ukraine battle or being used as reinforcements.
Ultimately, it reduces the amount of time that Russia can continue to conduct operations in Ukraine.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Decisions relating to military tactics and exercises are an operational matter for the Armed Forces, not the UK Government or Parliament.
