Petition Action

Amend the Child Abduction Act to criminalise failure to return a child to UK

Petition Details

Calling on the Government to amend the Child Abduction Act to criminalise failure to return a child to UK. Parents who send children abroad for religious or punishment purposes should be a crime

Additional Information

I would like the government to change the law to make it a criminal offence to force a child to live abroad who has lived in the UK most their life: parents should be punished in the criminal justice system if doing so. These children come back with mental health issues/PTSD which causes more strain on the NHS and welfare system as it is. Parents should not force any child to live abroad for being badly behaved or to force marriage or religious beliefs on them.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you are concerned about children being taken abroad against their wishes, but it's not clear exactly what actions you want to be made a criminal offence. The title of your petition refers to failure to return a child to the UK, but it's not clear if this means failure to return a child when this is what has been agreed, or something else.

We couldn't accept a petition calling on the Government to make it a criminal offence for children to move abroad, as this would be extreme and stop families moving abroad even if there were no child welfare issues.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
