Make Health Education a compulsory separate subject in all schools.
Although there have been recent improvements to the national curriculum in relation to health, health education and related topics should be covered in depth in a dedicated lesson, rather than being scattered across a variety of subjects, in order to influence health behaviours from an early age.
Research suggests that students who participate in health education as part of their school curriculum influence the development of their health related knowledge and attitudes, health literacy and skills, and positively impact health promoting behaviours.
Topics covered should include health knowledge, first aid, CPR, mental health and relationships, health service utilisation, growth & development, family and social health, disease prevention and control, lifestyle, nutrition and fitness.
