Pay student nurses for their placement hours
We’re often working 37.5+ hours a week to make up the 2300 hours of placement we have to complete to qualify. Though yes we are still learning and being taught how to do things, we’re learning on the job. Just like we would be if we were doing an apprenticeship, yet we are doing this with no pay.
Yes there is the grant in place which is £5000 but if you look at this in terms of the national living wage which is £9.90 an hour and in terms of the 2300 hours we are working, this is £15,000 over our 3 year course we are receiving in the grant, but this still doesn’t make up the £22,770 we would be making if we were being payed the national living wage. If we are going to decrease the shortage of NHS staff not only do nurses need to be paid more, student nurses deserve to be payed to.
